Background                                                                                                                                    Who is christopher columbus you may ask? Christopher columbus was an italian explorer who discovered the new world .Christopher columbus was born in 1451 in the republic of genoa, italy. He died at the age of 55 because of a heart attack.
Columbus day:
Columbus day is a legal holiday in most states which is to commemorate christopher columbus and the day he found the new world. This holiday is celebrated on the second monday of october. Christopher’s original landing to the new world was on october 12,1492. Most states didn’t celebrate this holiday until 1937 when it became an official holiday. Today some states still choose not to celebrate this holiday.
Why is this so important?:
Columbus wasn’t the first man to set foot on the western hemisphere but because he did was why it became very important. His great settlement opened doors to europeans for settlement in america.
Interesting facts:
Christopher columbus had set out to map the route of the western hemisphere instead he landed in what is today known as the bahamas. This is where he established his first colony. Columbus day can also be known as discovery day for some people. Not only is columbus day celebrated to commemorate columbus achievements but to celebrate their heritage. They often through parades and parties for and in honor of this cause.cc.jpg
Reflection: this holiday sounds pretty cool wish we could have celebrate it. I would like to have a day off to just celebrate and commemorate such an astonishing accomplishment that happen many decades ago. The only problem is that our district won’t give us the day off and where i live it’s not really celebrated in big.
