Roosevelt moved the holiday from the last thursday of november to the fourth thursday of november in December 26,1941. It has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789 since George
Washington made a proclamation about it. Thanksgiving became a federal holiday since 1863 during the civil war when abraham lincoln made a proclamation stating that it was to give thanks to the heavens for all that it has brought...in other words to be thankful. The first thanksgiving ever is said to have taken place in 1621 when the plymouth settlers sat down and enjoyed a fall feast after a successful harvest. They ate things that are now common on thanksgiving day with the fellow Wampanoag indians. All though it wasn’t planned to be a yearly thing, when the pilgrims came from England to America it soon did.
